On February 23, the Sacramento Gold Miners were announced as the CFL’s ninth franchise, during the league’s annual meetings in Hamilton. The team began play in 1993 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. They joined the West Division. Sacramento became the first U.S.-based team to play in the CFL, and it was the first expansion team to be admitted into the league since 1954, when the B.C. Lions became a franchise. A potential expansion team to San Antonio, Texas (the San Antonio Riders, formerly of the then-suspended WLAF, to play as the San Antonio Texans) was put on hold for the 1993 season after the team folded instead.

On March 6, The Canadian College Draft held in Calgary at the Jubilee Auditorium, becoming the first Western Canadian city to host the event since Winnipeg in 1971. Calgary also played host to the Grey Cup game for only the second time in history on Sunday, November 28. In that game, the Edmonton Eskimos defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 33–23 before a crowd of 50,035.

The CFL celebrated 100 years of football in Canada, commemorating the formation of the Canadian Rugby Union in 1892, the forerunner of Football Canada and the CFL. Former Alouette running back/tight end, Larry Smith was named as the ninth CFL Commissioner in history on Thursday, February 27.

The Calgary Stampeders then owned by Larry Ryckman, signed free agent quarterback, Doug Flutie in March. The CFL revoked the franchise of BC Lions owner Murray Pezim and assumed control of the team, when Pezim refused to pay off club bills, on August 27. After one month, Bill Comrie purchased the BC Lions franchise from the CFL on September 23.

At the CFL Awards, Doug Flutie was named as the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player for the second straight season, only becoming the third player to do so. Toronto played host to the Grey Cup for the 45th time, which is more than any other city. In addition, the Calgary Stampeders won their first Grey Cup championship in 21 years; ending the longest drought at that time of any CFL city, by defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 24–10.

In June 1992, the CFL played a preseason game between Toronto and Calgary in Portland, Oregon. It was a predecessor to the CFL USA expansion that would begin the next year. More

The 2017 Toronto Argonauts season was the 60th season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 145th season overall. The Argonauts finished the season in first place in the East Division and finished with a 9–9 record.

The Argonauts improved upon their 5–13 record from 2016 with their sixth win after 13 games and clinched a playoff spot following a Hamilton Tiger-Cats loss on October 13, 2017.[1] The team hosted their first playoff game since 2013, in which they defeated the crossover Saskatchewan Roughriders in the East Final by a score of 25–21. The Argonauts made their 23rd appearance in the Grey Cup championship game and won for the 17th time in the 105th Grey Cup game in Ottawa against the league-leading Calgary Stampeders by a score of 27–24. It was the third largest fourth-quarter comeback in Grey Cup history (eight-point deficit) and the Argos became the first team in Grey Cup history with two touchdowns of 100-plus yards.

With the 2018 Toronto Argonauts team failing to qualify for the playoffs, the 2017 Argonauts became the first championship team since the 1970 Montreal Alouettes to miss the playoffs in both the preceding and following years.  More

The 2018 Calgary Stampeders season was the 61st season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 84th overall. The Stampeders qualified for the playoffs for the 14th straight year and finished in first place in the West Division for the third straight year. The BC Lions 1964 finished the season in first place in the Western Conference with an 11–2–3 record, the fewest losses in one season in team history. Of the eight retired numbers in team history, four of those players played on the 1964 team. The Lions began the season undefeated in ten games and were 10–1–1 against western opponents. The Lions’ defense was, once again, outstanding as they allowed a team record 10.5 points and 245 yards per game. Joe Kapp would lead the CFL is passing with 2816 yards through the air and 194 completions.

The Lions won the Western Finals over Calgary, taking two games to one, sending them to the Grey Cup Once again, the Lions met the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 52nd Grey Cup in a rematch of the previous year’s game. After taking a 34–8 lead into the fourth quarter, the Lions cruised to their first championship by a score of 34–24 on the heels of defensive back and backup fullback Bill Munsey’s two touchdown performance. Converted defensive back By Bailey, who scored the first touchdown in Lions’ history, retired after the game, ending his 11-year CFL career. More

The Edmonton Eskimos 1978 finished in 1st place in the Western Conference with a 10–4–2 record and won the 66th Grey Cup. It was Warren Moon’s rookie season, and he replaced the injured Bruce Lemmerman as the backup quarterback and completed 89 of 173 passes for 1,112 yards and five touchdowns. He was Edmonton’s nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie Award.

The Edmonton Eskimos 1981 finished in 1st place in the West Division with a 14–1–1 record and won their fourth consecutive Grey Cup championship after winning the 69th Grey Cup.

The Eastern and Western Football Conferences, which had carried on as separate and autonomous entities since the founding of the CFL in 1958, agreed to a full merger prior to the start of the 1981 season.

With the merger, the Eastern and Western Football Conferences were dissolved and renamed as the East and West Divisions.

The merger authorizes the CFL to have full authority over decisions, including the adoption of a full interlocking schedule for both divisions. All nine teams played each other twice, once home and once away, regardless of their affiliated division. Other than during the CFL’s U.S. expansion era of the mid-1990s, the League’s teams have played at least one game home and one away versus every other team in the League since the 1981 season. More
